The history of the Gate Bracelet is a fascinating (and somewhat sinister) snapshot of patriarchy and gender oppression, but don’t let that stop you from reclaiming the gate bracelet as a symbol of boundaries and personal ownership of the Self! Gate bracelets became popular in the Victorian era, when men who would be away for extended periods of time would buy solid gold ‘gates’ secured with solid gold heart padlocks, to secure around the wrist of the woman they loved.
At first this history made me recoil from the piece of jewellery I had coveted, until I decided to use this symbolism for my own purposes. To me, my gate bracelet is a gift I gave to myself to symbolise a commitment I have made to always be my own most important relationship. All this to say – if you love this vintage, high quality piece of history, snap it up. You get to decide your own story.
This particular piece has 9ct hallmarks on the heart shaped locket and is in very good condition. A true vintage piece from 1975, with a gorgeous decorative love heart padlock. This would fit a small to average size adult wrist.
