This antique tortoise shell piece inlaid with 14ct gold and silver cross is one of the pieces sourced from my favourite dealer in Islamic antiquities in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Although the cross is now a symbol of Christianity, it has always been a powerful protective symbol beyond that religion, and is recognised as a sign of harnessing the universal force of good, for many. The Maltese Cross - a star with eight points is a symbol of the Eight Beatitudes; blessings described by the prophet Jesus. These blessings are meant to echo the highest ideal of spiritual love and compassion; emphasising love and humility over control and force.
